Mar Amongo was born in Sta. Cruz, Manila on October 9, 1936. Mar studied comics illustration under Nestor Redondo, an influence that he carried strongly in his work. His style can be characterized as meticulous and realistic, a style that would culminate in an impressive series of black and white illustrations he drew while he was in the Middle East in the early 90's.
He began working in comics for Extra Komiks with Ramon Marcelino, and went on to contribute to many other publications including Romansa Komiks, Modern Komiks (in which he served as partner for 5 years), Tagalog Klasiks, Espesyal Komiks, etc.
Amongo provided artwork for an adaptation of Jose Rizal's El Filibusterismo published by Manlapaz Publishing, which remain in print to this day.
He was also able to contribute artwork for many DC Comics publications including All Out War, G.I. Combat, Ghosts, House of Mystery, Secrets of Sinister House and Weird War Tales.
Amongo left the Philippines to work in the Middle East as an artist from 1983 to 1994. Upon his return, he continued to work in comics, drawing graphic novels like Talons of Time and The Tiger's Fang specially for Enckankar, a religion based on the Light and the Sound of God.
He was also commissioned by the Philippine government to do several paintings to commemorate the Centennial. One of his paintings was used as billboards erected all over the country.
Amongo passed away on the morning of August 10, 2005, due to a second stroke caused by complications due to diabetes. He was 68 years old.
