In 1953, MGM Pictures comissioned
ACE
Publications in the Philippines to come up with a preview/ adaptation
of their hit blockbuster QUO VADIS ,
starring Robert Taylor, Deborah Kerr and Peter Ustinov. The
film was set to be shown in the country later that year. Ace Publications,
publisher of early Philippine comic books like Pilipino Komiks, Tagalog
Klasiks, and Hiwaga, comissioned hot young artist Nestor Redondo, fresh
from illustrating Mars Ravelo's hit Darna, to draw the 16 page preview/adaptation.
Written by Clodualdo Del Mundo, Quo
Vadis was serialized in Tagalog Klasiks #91 and 92.
The results were so spectacular that MGM, impressed by Redondo's talent,
sought to hire him on the spot and fly him to the United States.
Redondo declined, thinking he was too young to make the move.
Of the 16 original pages that Redondo created,
only the last 8 are accounted for, pages that were published in Tagalog
Klasiks #92. The pages reproduced here are scans made from first generation
photocopies of those originals, and they comprise all 8 pages of part 2
of the adaptation.
I'm currently working to get scans of the
originals themselves, which I will upload here once I have the opportunity.
