In 1994, future Alamat Comics president Budjette Tan requested that I allow him to use the first chapter of Wasted (which had just come out), in a comic book anthology he is putting together called Comics 101. Wanting to do Wasted separately subsequently, I offered to do Timawa for Budjette's next comic book, and one of Alamat Comics' very first books, ALAMAT 101. Timawa was one of three castes of pre hispanic Filipinos: Maharlika, meaning "nobility"; Alipin, meaning "slaves"; and Timagua or Timawa, meaning "Free-men". Timawa was never to be used in the comic book itself. The main character, Enrique San Gabriel, was actually the last in a long line of Apolaki Warriors which began since history began. This particular 2 page spread took me like a week to do, including the time I went picture taking for reference. You can see this place yourself when you climb up the LRT Terminal on the corner of Blumentritt and Rizal Avenue in Manila. This particular LRT station was recently the site of 9 deaths resulting from a bomb which exploded in the train just as it pulled into the station. |
